Beyond Us News: Indigenous leaders killed in Brazil drive-by shooting

There is some funny business going on in Brazil! Two indigenous leaders were killed in a drive by shooting right after a meeting with Brazil’s electric utilities company Eletronorte and the Brazilian National Indigenous Foundation. Others  were wounded in Brazil’s Maranhão state, in an attack not far from where a prominent tribesman who defended the Amazon rain forest was killed last month.

Members of the Guajajara tribe are known as the forest guardians who protect their territory against illegal deforestation. The attack occurred on the margins of a federal highway near El-Betel village in the country’s north-east side.

The group was returning from a meeting when they were attacked by gunmen in a moving car. Indigenous tribes in Brazil are facing increasing violence during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, who has threatened to ultimately eliminate tribal rights and encouraged the commercial exploitation of their protected lands. Tribes have faced violence from illegal loggers and miners.

Its not just a coincidence that these attacks occurred at the same time of the UN’s two-week international climate change conference in Madrid, where Brazilian indigenous leaders were attending and attempting to draw attention to the importance of protecting their forest territories. I think not!

One indigenous witness recorded a video of the scene, along with a plea for help.
"Please spread this video so that people can know the state of vulnerability we are in, for lack of security, for illicit acts that some people practice. And now our relatives have had to pay with their own lives," the filmer said.

This president is destroying these people for their own financial gains not for his countries. No people should be attacked in this way just because their "in the way".
